The Manila Galleon Trade Beyond Silver & Silks: TRANSPACIFIC video documentation
This video is organised as a discussion between Roberto Junco Sánchez (Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, INAH) & Angela Schottenhammer (History Department, KU Leuven), who guide viewers through the Museo Nacional del Virreinato, Tepotzotlán, and the Museo Histórico de Acapulco, Fuerte de San Diego, presenting products that made their way from Asia to Mexico and discussing their social and economic impact. The role of religion is also addressed. The video provides insights into the Manila galleon trade, which officially operated between 1565 and 1815. In addition to the Spanish, numerous other players were involved, the range of commodities went far beyond silver and silks, and even smaller ports, countries or islands had their place in this system.
The video was directed by Alberto Soto (Subdirección de Arqueología Subacuática, INAH), and the final post-production was handled by Martin Hantich (Superhypernatural Multimedia Agency, Kitzbühel, Austria).
